Immerse yourself in “Food is Medicine” at Owamni on August 12, 2024, for a one-night-only, one-of-a-kind dining experience. This special event, a joint effort by Owamni and our nonprofit parent North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NATIFS), is curated by our founder and Executive Director Sean Sherman, award-winning chef, educator, author, and activist dedicated to Indigenous foodways, with ethnobotanist Linda Black Elk, our Educational Programming and Community Outreach leader with over 20 years of expertise in ethnobotany, food sovereignty, and traditional practices. Together, Sean and Linda will explore the healing properties of traditional foods and their role in sustainable food systems during a special dining experience at Owamni. 

Explore an exclusive menu featuring over 20 different Native plants that nourish the mind, body, and soul. Guests will receive a special take-home plant book from Linda Black Elk, detailing the traditional plants used throughout the dinner and their healing benefits.

This one-night-only dinner is a fundraiser for our participation at Terra Madre, an international gathering dedicated to sustainable food systems and local traditions, organized by the Slow Food movement. Founded in Rome, Italy, in 1986 in response to the rise of fast food, the Slow Food movement advocates for healthy and sustainable food practices. This festival in Turin, Italy serves as a global platform, uniting farmers, producers, and activists to promote and celebrate biodiversity, environmental stewardship, and culinary heritage. Our team will raise awareness about the importance and value of Indigenous food sovereignty, and contribute to the dialogue around challenges and solutions to maintaining traditional food systems. With your help, we will bring a delegation of staff, focusing on the healing power of local ingredients.
